There’s something about Australian opals that just stops you in your tracks. Maybe it’s the fire, the way the light dances inside the stone, or the fact that no two are ever alike. As someone who works closely with these incredible gems every day, I can honestly say: they never stop amazing me.

We wanted to share a little of that magic with you.

What Makes Opals So Different?

Opals are a bit of a mystery. Unlike diamonds or sapphires, they aren’t cut to sparkle — they already shimmer from within. Made from silica and water over millions of years, they’re full of colours that shift and glow depending on the light. Some look like galaxies, others like oceans, sunsets, or electric storms.

Every opal has its own story, and I think that’s what makes them so powerful. They’re unpredictable, wild, and completely unique. Just like us.

Why Australia?

If you’ve ever been out to Lightning Ridge or Coober Pedy, you’ll understand why the best opals come from here. It’s dry, it’s harsh, and it’s beautiful — and deep below the surface, that’s where the treasure lives.

Australia produces over 90% of the world’s opals, and the variety here is something else:

• Black opals from Lightning Ridge with that deep, mysterious fire.
• White and crystal opals from Coober Pedy, full of soft pastels and hidden rainbows.
• Boulder opals from Queensland, which are wild and earthy and full of character.

Each one has its own personality. Some are quiet and gentle. Others are loud, bold, impossible to ignore.

• Ancient cultures believed opals were the luckiest stones — holding all the colours (and powers!) of other gems.
• Aboriginal Dreamtime stories tell of rainbows that touched the earth and turned into opal.
• The Romans were obsessed with them and gave them as gifts of love and hope.
